South Australia Fishing Guide

South Australia (SA) is one of the most varied and rewarding fisheries in the country, offering sheltered gulfs, remote offshore islands, and access to some of the richest southern bluefin tuna grounds in the world. Adelaide is the gateway, but the true heart of SA fishing lies in its gulfs, Eyre Peninsula, and far southern ports.

The fishery is structured around two large gulfs — Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf — plus the offshore waters of the Eyre Peninsula and Limestone Coast. Gulf St Vincent, accessible from Adelaide, is a productive metro fishery where snapper, King George whiting, and squid dominate. Spencer Gulf, stretching north from Port Lincoln, is deeper and more rugged, producing big whiting, snapper, and gummy shark along with pelagics further south. These sheltered gulfs make fishing accessible most of the year, with short run distances and plenty of sheltered anchorages.

The Eyre Peninsula is South Australia’s sportfishing powerhouse. Port Lincoln is famous as the tuna capital of Australia, with southern bluefin tuna arriving each summer and staying into winter. Charters here troll skirted lures, diving minnows, or cast lures to surface-feeding schools, with barrels over 100 kg landed each year. Coffin Bay, nearby, offers pristine waters where anglers target whiting, salmon, and squid inshore, while offshore reefs produce snapper, kingfish, and samson fish. Ceduna and Streaky Bay further west provide access to surf beaches where Australian salmon run thick, along with offshore grounds for snapper and gummy shark.

The Limestone Coast, including towns like Robe and Kingston SE, offers rugged surf and offshore reefs that produce tuna, snapper, and shark. Southern ports such as Victor Harbor and Cape Jervis serve as gateways to Kangaroo Island, where fishing is world-class. Kangaroo Island’s waters are loaded with King George whiting, snapper, squid, and salmon, and offshore reefs here hold Samson fish, tuna, and shark.

Charter styles vary from short half-day whiting and squid trips near Adelaide or Kangaroo Island, to full-day offshore tuna runs out of Port Lincoln, to multi-day expeditions exploring Eyre Peninsula islands. Techniques are equally varied: bait fishing with squid or pipis for whiting, jigging and soft plastics for snapper, trolling diving minnows for tuna, and live baiting around pinnacles for kingfish. Sharks are targeted with berley trails offshore, drawing in bronze whalers, school shark, and even makos.

Seasonal swings are pronounced. Summer is tuna season around Port Lincoln, with kingfish and snapper active offshore. Autumn keeps tuna thick and adds reliable whiting and squid inshore. Winter brings southern bluefin tuna barrels in the south and salmon along the surf beaches. Spring fires up whiting and squid again in the gulfs, with snapper biting hard on reefs. Throughout the year, SA delivers a balanced mix of inshore table fish and offshore sportfish, with plenty of sheltered waters to keep trips accessible.

Fishing Seasons in South Australia

Spring

Spring is prime for King George whiting and squid in the gulfs. Snapper begin biting heavily on offshore reefs, taken on baits and soft plastics. Offshore waters see smaller tuna schools begin moving south. Surf fishing along the Limestone Coast produces salmon. Weather is warming, offering more reliable offshore days.

Summer

Summer is peak season nationwide. Bluefin tuna, marlin, and mahi-mahi dominate offshore from the Atlantic to Hawaii. Red snapper, grouper, and cobia are prime in the Gulf, while salmon runs fill Alaskan rivers. Inshore tarpon, snook, and redfish are strong in Florida. Freshwater lakes produce largemouth bass, catfish, and muskie. The charter industry is busiest during these months.

Fall

Fall offers migrations and heavy feeding. Striped bass and bluefish peak in the Northeast, tuna remain offshore, and wahoo become strong targets in the Southeast. Gulf anglers find yellowfin tuna offshore and continued reef action inshore. Pacific coasts see salmon runs taper but halibut and rockfish steady. Freshwater action remains hot, with muskie and walleye most active in cooling waters.

Winter

Winter slows northern fisheries, with ice fishing for walleye, perch, and pike taking over. The Southeast shines with peak sailfish off Florida, strong grouper and snapper in the Gulf, and winter trout in rivers. West Coast anglers chase yellowtail and rockfish, while Hawaii continues producing marlin and tuna year-round. Florida and southern states see continued inshore fishing for redfish and snook.
