Each year, anglers from across Australia and around the world head to the Northern Territory for one of the most thrilling fishing events on the planet — the Million Dollar Barramundi competition. This world-famous event showcases the NT’s incredible fishing grounds while offering anglers the chance to catch a tagged Barramundi worth up to $1 million AUD.
Organized by the Northern Territory Tourism Board, the contest draws both seasoned and first-time anglers eager to experience the region’s wild beauty and its legendary Barramundi fishing.
Every year, 110 Barramundi are tagged and released into NT waters.
- 10 fish carry million-dollar tags.
- 100 fish are worth $10,000 each.
The first person to land one of the million-dollar fish wins the grand prize. Any additional million-dollar fish caught afterward are worth $10,000. To take part, anglers must register online before fishing, then head out with a local charter to one of the designated fishing areas.
The event typically runs from October through March, coinciding with the Barramundi season — the best time of year to target this iconic species in the Top End.
